The impact of social distancing has meant a rethink of the way singles engage with others on dating apps – and more people than ever now want a partner as lockdown exposes the reality of loneliness. But far from giving up altogether, singles who are stuck at home are apparently spending more interacting online than ever. It’s leading to a “new era of digital courtship”, according to research from one dating app.

According to the bosses of Badoo, data shows half 50 per cent of singles are spending more time on the app, engaging in longer and more meaningful conversations with those they might not normally chat to. And with lockdown leading to an increased sense of isolation – especially for those who live alone – the vast majority 67 per cent admit to longing for a relationship during these uncertain and difficult times, with nearly half 44 per cent confessing that finding a partner feels more important to them than ever.

Despite not being able to go out on dates in the real world, singletons continue to date creatively with users suggesting virtual museum tours 92 per cent , online classes 91 per cent and quizzes 90 per cent to break the ice and assess compatibility. The research shows almost half 47 per cent are less concerned about looks at this time and are instead focusing more on the personality of their match. A further 48 per cent said they are giving people more of a chance, speaking to those they might not connect with normally.

Forming relationships through technology also means ending relationships in the same fashion. Many aspects of life that were once taken for granted have changed beyond recognition because of the coronavirus pandemic and that includes dating. Meeting potential matches had already been transformed by a virtual world of dating apps, but now, with lockdown rules in place, so too must the dates themselves.

The advice to never break up with someone by text, or even a phone call, has fallen by the wayside. Enter Zumping – a term coined by The Guardian to refer to the strange experience of being dumped on web conference platform Zoom. There are similar facilities for FaceTime and Houseparty – known as Facetumped and Housepumped respectively. It turns out it’s not uncommon either, after a spurned lover tweeted : “Am I the first person who’s been dumped via zoom?

Bristol is just one of the cities across the UK where singleton Mark Rofe, 30, plans to advertise for a new girlfriend. For most singletons out there, Tinder and Bumble usually do the trick when it comes to finding love in our modern digital age. Mark Rofe, 30, from Sheffield, bought an enormous advertising billboard for a girlfriend after being single for more than a year. Now, he’s started a crowdfunding page, so that he can spread his advertising campaign across the UK, including to here in Bristol.

The Daily Star reports that it all started when a friend sparked up the mad idea during a casual conversation. Against a bright salmon pink background, the words ‘Single?

One transport project which is moving closer to realisation in the Bristol area — and is popular with locals too — is the reopening to passenger traffic of the railway line to Portishead which is currently only used by freight trains to and from Portbury Dock. The project will entail building a new station at Portishead and reopening Pill station. The site of the original Ashton Gate station. Picture courtesy of Wikimedia Commons. We are local residents and organisations big and small in BS3 campaigning for a new railway station in Ashton Gate on the Portishead branch line.

We want a new station opening in with two trains an hour in both directions — towards Portishead and Temple Meads. In the Portishead rail line will be upgraded for new passenger services linking Bristol, Bath, Avonmouth and Portishead. New stations are being built at Pill and Portishead. Four trains an hour will pass through Ashton Gate. A station linked into the local bus network would encourage visits to the area and promote the local economy. We believe trains must stop at Ashton Gate to allow residents, workers and visitors to come and go easily and comfortably whilst decreasing the strain on the heavily-used local road network.

A new station would bring substantial, long-term benefits to South West Bristol. Local people are increasingly turning to public transport and more rail services help to promote the city as a European Green Capital.

The Bristol man behind the Date Shahan campaign has discussed his budding rivalry with a similar Date Mark campaign. Plucky Shahan Miah decided to start his own website, DateShahan. As well as an online dating profile, the year-old’s campaign includes a Youtube video and even its own hashtag – DateShahan. Despite bagging a few dates and media appearances through the campaign, Shahan remains single ahead of Valentine’s Day this year. To make matters worse, he now faces competition from other singletons who have set up similar campaigns.

One such campaign – Date Mark – was recently started by year-old Mark Rofe from Sheffield, who plans to erect billboard advertisements across the UK, including in Bristol. He said he hadn’t. Some people have joked there’s a rivalry between us now. Since the launch of his own campaign last year, Shahan says he has been pleased with the reaction and has even appeared on BBC Points West to discuss his search for love.

He previously said he embarked on the audacious bid for love because he found using Tinder “uncomfortable”. Shahan’s website includes a dating profile, photos and contact information for any interested women. You can see Shahan’s website and maybe get in touch to organise a date here. By Alexander Brock.
